Welcome to Clonakilty Favour Exchange

$

CFE is a skills and labour exchange system.  It is open, voluntary and does not involve the making or spending of money.  It is at heart "an economy of goodwill" with its own currency, the favour. This website explains  how CFE works and how you can join us.

What is CFE?
Maybe you have a large job to do like digging your garden or decorating your house and want to call a favour from others to help you - and to be able to pay them back in kind?  CFE makes that possible by connecting people who are willing to work for each other in this way while keeping a central directory of who can offer what and who has helped who.  The CFE system is designed to be effective, reliable and practical - and professionally maintained.
If you join the scheme your talents and skills or offers of labour will be listed for others in the scheme to see.  You will then have access to their skills and labour and they can call on you in return.  Each quarter-hour worked for someone else in the scheme gains a credit, each quarter-hour worked for you spends one.  An open register is kept of who has done what and to maintain a fair balance of time worked.  The system is open and democratic and aims to build a self-help community while sharing talents and time for the benefit of members.    Read more about what we do on the 'How it Works' page or contact us to ask any questions you might have.

If you want to read more about how CFE began, read our article about the origins of CFE

You can listen to an explanation of how it works on RTE's John Murray Show here

Favour Exchange Members' Survey

$

Many thanks to those who have already completed the survey.  We would really like to hear from everyone else too - this is your chance to help make the favour exchange work as well as possible.

Membership survey linked here

Read on - important instructions below!

*NB There is a small glitch in the survey software.  To add comments in the 'Other' or free text/comment boxes for questions 1-9 you must tick the circle - to the left of the associated statement/suggestion, immediately above the text box for that part of the question. If you do not do this you will receive an error message and be directed back to the survey.  The questions you have not completed properly will be highlighted in red.

For those who have already completed the survey - you can resubmit if you want  to add to or change what you wrote.  Just click on the link again, amend your replies and your latest response will automatically overwrite your earlier responses.

At the end of an exciting first year which saw the Clonakilty Favour Exchange grow well beyond expectations, the CFE coordinating group is conducting a survey (linked below) of your experiences of the exchange to date.

We need to know what is good, what is not so good and how collectively we would all like to see the Favour Exchange develop.

We would be very grateful if you would help us by completing the short survey at the link above.  It's a simple 'tick box' questionnaire which also offers space for additional feedback/comment - and takes no more than 5 minutes to complete.

Many thanks in advance for your participation - it is very much appreciated.

Miriam

PS Please email clonfavour@gmail.com or text/phone 087 295 3838 if you have any questions about the survey.

Another great day at the Favour Fayre

$

Community and goodwill are great feelgood factors, but you can't put them in your pocket.  However, at the Clonakilty Favour Fayre you can get a good dose of feelgood, make friends and come away with some amazing stuff!  No money changes hands, but everything else does.  If you haven't been, try it out.

On 14th April the fifth Favour Fayre took place behind O Donovan's Hotel. Around the library stall (give one, take one - books, CD's and DVD's) and the tool bank (lend and borrow tools from other members) CFE members set up their stalls of food, artifacts and goods.  The bright stalls with matching table cloths filled the covered yard topped with bunting made by member Ann Scallon.  Behind, Renee Fouche set up a Shiatsu session room in the cabana, and at the entrance the favour bank was ready with a tin full of little printed fish for members to draw down and trade for goods.

During the afternoon, while dispensing and receiving books and DVD's at the stall, I chatted with members and visitors and talked about plans for the future of the fare with Karin Jossells - new favour fayre manager for CFE.  As well as catching up with old friends and making new ones, I arranged some future exchanges including piano lessons and some power-washing of our garden.

I came away with a bottle of nutritionist Michelle Ryan's life enhancing Kvaas, some beautiful organic veg and a tray of growing plants from Julia, a chair from Sam and another classic film from Vic.  If that wasn't enough, for just one favour I also had a magnificent bar of  chocolate from Allison and a Shiatsu massage from Renee. I came away feeling better than it is decent to print.

Meanwhile Deirdre's felt workshop kept the younger children busy.  The tapestry they made involved a very friendly crocodile and will be presented to the President on his visit to the town next month.

The favour fayre is now a regular fixture for the second Sunday of each month.  The next fare will take place on Sunday the 12th May from 2.00 to 4.00pm.  Expect great meat and veg, food and drink and artwork, a bicycle repair shop, a massage and maybe a horoscope telling session.  More news to follow.  If you would like to set up a stall, or bring some goods to exchange, email us on clonfavour@gmail.com.  If you are not a member of CFE, you can join on the day.

Minutes for C.F.E. meeting held on Monday 23rd Feb 2012
Present at meeting were:
Bev Cotton
Miriam Cotton
Gerald Walsh
Olive Walsh
*Our meeting began with Bev reading of minutes from our last meeting.
*We decided to change the name of our group to the Clonakilty Favour Exchange as we believe it describes more clearly what we are about.
*We also renamed our Hit Squad to Help Squad.
*We agreed to concentrate on building up our favor exchange and not to get involved in the trading of goods at this time.
*We discussed the idea of asking new members to provide photo ID. We decided against this as it could be off-putting.
We also decided against charging a membership fee preferring instead to arrange a fundraiser later on in the year. A gig at a Clonakilty venue was suggested.
In the mean time until fundraising begins Bev and Miriam Cotton and Ger and Olive Walsh have agreed to fund the initial costs of the publicity i.e... brochures posters T-shirts.
Monies to be refunded some time in the future. A sum of 300 hundred euro. 150 per couple was agreed.
*We took advice from C.A.B. regarding involvement in our C.F.E. group while in receipt of Unemployment Benefit.
There is currently no rule against involvement, however it is up to the individual to inform the Benefits Agency of any voluntary work.
*Miriam presented her proposal draft promotions plan and time table launch for our C.F.E. group. Available to read on website. All present agreed with plan.
*Miriam is to look into Census information to better understand our local demographic.
*Olive described her understanding of the scope/remit of her Membership Co-ordination Role.
*Ger shared his list of jobs/skills as a prompt to new members joining the scheme which is to be published on the C.f.E. website.

*We also discussed having a Wanted section to encourage trading.  As well as listing skills and qualifications Bev suggested having a willing to do list to enable members to increase their potential offers.
Bev suggested a 15 minute or small job section i.e...for a dripping tap or other job that takes little time to complete.
Bev is to work on the website to breaking down skills and presenting them in a user friendly way, perhaps incorporating symbols.
*Bev read his up to date work on our Constitution/Rules/Ethos. Available on our website.
*We would like to aim for 3 projects a year for our Help Squad,in the Clonakilty area.
These projects will be to the benefit of those in need of help who are unable to participate in our scheme and will be funded by the quarterly subs of 5 favors per member.
*Miriam suggested a message board on our website to encourage members to communicate with each other.
*We plan to have a presence once a month at the Friday market to continue to promote our group and find new members.
* Olive suggested preparing a generic letter to send to potential recipients of our Help Squad
We decided on time plan for timetable to launch.
*Next meeting to be held on Tue 21th Feb. The purpose of this meeting is to invite interested people to find out about C.F.E. and invite them to join. We will begin to trade as soon as possible to test system and if possible photograph some trades for our website.
*A meeting on the  Tue 20 March is planned for wider recruitment.
*We decided that the optimum time for a public meeting was about 4-5 weeks before Launch date. Not sure if we set a date for that.
*Launch is planned for Friday 11th May, market day. Suggested venue is

Astna Square
followed by a leafleting of the Clonakilty area. We decided it is important to take good contact information from interested       people and follow up with a call wihin two weeks of Launch.

For New Members

Welcome to the Clonakilty Favour Exchange!

Below are some suggestions to help you get the most out of the scheme.  We suggest you read this thoroughly – hopefully it will answer any questions you might have.  If not, email the coordinating group anytime for information or help: - clonfavour@gmail.com- - or phone any of the contacts given below.

1. THE MOST IMPORTANT THING – ASK FOR FAVOURS!

The very best way to make CFE work for you and to begin enjoying its community is to jump right in and ask for a favour.

CFE works best if everybody is asking for favours. It also makes it more likely that everybody is doing favours.  So, please don’t think that you have to earn favour credits before you can begin asking for some yourself – everybody in the scheme is expecting to be asked for favours.

There are a few ways you can explore what is on offer:

* Browse individual member pages to see what skills they are offering (click on Members tab at top of website)

*Search for a key word (or any term or name) in the search bar (click search bar on the top right hand side of the website or go to the offers page)

*Click on any category in the labels directory in the right sidebar and see a list of members offering that skill

*Check the ‘Offers’ pages on the website to see who is offering what!

*Can’t see what you need? Email us your ask at clonfavour@gmail.com and Liz will search for you and send a list of names and skills that best fit what you are looking for.

Coordinating Group/Members Meetings: First Tuesday each month – all welcome. Items for agenda – email clonfavour@gmail.com.  Minutes of previous meetings in Members’ Area at the bottom of each website page.

2. GETTING TO KNOW OTHER MEMBERS

In addition to asking for and receiving favours, there are several ways to meet people in the Favour Exchange:

Monthly Coordinating Group/Members meeting– First Tuesday every month.  All members are encouraged to attend these and to participate as much as possible in coordinating the Favour Exchange – it belongs to every member equally.  Coordinating roles are not permanent.  CFE operates on an egalitarian, equal participation basis.  Attending meetings and contributing your ideas and becoming actively involved helps to ensure this principle is upheld.

Coffee meet-ups take place weekly at the Friday Farmers’ Market, in the seating area behind O’ Donovan’s Hotel, Clonakilty.  Just turn up and see who’s there – the crowd usually congregates anytime between 12.00pm and 3.00pm.

Speed Exchange Evenings:  These are a fun, effective way of introducing members to each other – dates will be notified by email and text.

CFE classes/groups: yoga and pilates eg – please email clonfavour@gmail.com for up-to-date info.  Details will be emailed to members regularly and posted on the website.

The Book, Film and DVD/CD clubs.  See info on the website (Members’ Area at the bottom of the website.)

First Sunday Swap Days: A goods exchange event held on the first Sunday of each month where members can swap goods or barter goods for favours. Venue: behind O’ Donovan’s Hotel, Clonakilty 2-4pm.  Email clonfavour@gmail.com for more information.

3. GENERAL

Favour Credit/Debit Limits

A favour is the equivalent of 15 minutes – the smallest unit of time that can be recorded for work undertaken.  All members begin with a debit and credit limit of 100 favours (25 hours) each.  From time to time, members may have a big project they need help with – doing up a garden or house for instance - which may take them over their limit.  Email your request in advance to clonfavour@gmail.com and the coordinating group will ask for agreement at the next members’ meeting (first Tuesday each month).  Every effort will be made to support people who need favours like these within the limits of what members can realistically offer.

To ask for a favour– contact the member/s directly via the contact information on their membership page.  If you are being asked for a favour, check the membership page if you would like to know more about the person.  When requesting a favour, satisfy yourself that the person you are requesting a favour from is appropriately experienced.  Again, see individual membership pages for details of skills, training and experience.  The CFE coordinating group are  happy to put people in touch with one another – thereafter the exchange is between members themselves.  Responsibility for registering favours done lies with the person who does the favour – by email (clonfavour@gmail.com) or by text to Bev 089 435 2675.

Materials or other costs beyond the labour/skills offered are borne by the person requesting the favour.

Administration Levy

Time given to administering the scheme by coordinators is reclaimed via a levy of 5 favours from each member every three months.  The coordinating roles require more time than this levy covers but it helps to recoup some of hours of dedication and hard work involved!

***Please Note***

The Clonakilty Favour Exchange is an online, website-based scheme

All administration is done online – there is no paper based communication or record-keeping.  Most communication with members by the coordinating group is via email - and by text message or mobile phone calls too.  We suggest checking your email boxes and visiting the website regularly to ensure you are not missing CFE news or notices.

Finally, we hope you will enjoy the many community, social and practical benefits of the Favour Exchange.

Cheers!

Daisy aka Christine Deady is a CFE member, admin team stalwart and musician. Her song Follow the Water won the recent Christie Hennessy Song Competition 2012, and her first album of songs has just been recorded!

Daisy needs your help.  The album needs a bit more technical work before it hits the shelves.  A special fundraiser has been organised for Thursday 16th May at the Courtyard Bar Clonakilty 9.00pm- come and hear Daisy and friends play and pledge support for a Fund It campaign that will help to complete the final stages of editing and releasing her new album.

This fundraiser gig is a great chance to hear some music, but also a nice community effort to get behind a local person.  Many Favour Exchange members are supporting it - and are having a lot of fun along the way.  Look out too for a hi tec live stream of comments on the night with Christian at the controls and local tweeting celebs on their laptops.

A special mention too to Phil at Clonakilty Business Solutions who has donated a specially designed flyer and poster.

The gig is free, and all pledges get a free copy of the album.
